  • Why Can’t You Just Shut the F***K Up?

This week was burger week in Halifax, an annual fundraising event that is widely reported and followed by citizens.
I only got out once, to the Celtic Corner where the proceeds of Burger Week went to support Margaret’s House.
Margaret’s House is named in memory of Margaret Savage, who was a great supporter of the F.O.O.D. program as was her husband John Savage.
Mayor Mike Savage and his brothers and sisters continue to support Margaret’s House.

Another person who had a burger this week was Premier Stephen McNeil. I am sure few of the other participants who posted #HalifaxBurgerWeek posts on Twitter were subjected to the following petty, mean and self-promoting comments. The Premier also posted an item promoting the Cancer Societies daffodil campaign and received the same sort of comments.

I have participated in the political life of Nova Scotia for a long time and I have written many posts that criticize the policy proposals of political parties. I do not, however, make a practice of attacking people personally. I did post a tweet to Gary Burrill noting his constant stream of negativism, but it was not on a post promoting a charity.

These types of things get much worse than those I have highlighted here. They include comments on character, appearance, sexual orientation and intelligence. They include harsh and abusive language, threats and become a constant stream of disheartening noise.

    Why?

Are any of these good citizens prepared to put their time and energy into anything more than tweeting? Will they put their name forward to serve the province, city, neighborhood? Will they subject themselves and their families to the abuse they dish out?

This week the Herald ran an opinion piece from Bruce Lantz on this topic, an interesting read.

I ask again why? If you don’t want to get involved your facebook posts and twitter rants are a waste of time. I have the greatest respect for political opponents who work and advocate for their position, and maybe some of the twitter posters do as well.

So maybe we can agree that anyone who is promoting a good cause can just get a pass on that? Can we agree on that? Probably not, and we will reap what we sow.

  • 3D Printing

    EC12 RC Sailboat Spreaders

DSCF0001These spreaders are version 12, which is a little misleading but a lot of little changes have brought us here.

My initial design was too thin at the central collar and was prone to breaking when installing them on the mast. The spreaders have been strengthed as will by making them 3mm thick and adding to the horizontal plane as well.

A further refinement is underway that will add some more to the forward profile of the collar and an innovative approach to installing the spreaders with the surrounding rigging.

Also on the drawing board is a similar approach to spreaders on the Soling 1M and a new gooseneck to work with my upgraded vang arrangement.

    Hardware Upgrade

I added a Rasberry Pi 3 from Canakit running Octopi to control the Maker Select V2 3D Printer. With this configuration loading files and monitoring the printing from a web interface makes it a lot easier to work with. I am looking forward now to adding some upgrades to the printer to make levelling easier and enhance the stability of the tower.

  • New Painting

It’s been a few months since I painted anything. So today I stuck in and painted this small acrylic on canvas.

I chose it so I could work on shading and texture, hope you like it.

I can’t sign it yet because the humidity is making the drying time quite long.

  • Learning 3D Design and Printing

All of this is thanks to Chuck Millican who gave me a set of 3D printed Upper Spreaders for my EC12.  I emailed Chuck when I got home and inquired about 3D printers and availability of files for the model sailboats. Chuck sent me a whole bunch of files and I bought a 3D printer.

My 3D printer is a lower cost model from Monoprice the Select Mini IIIp. Despite its low cost it does get good reviews from users. You can read more about it at http://mpselectmini.com/ where other users post information and links to upgrade and get the most from the printer.

I spent a few months after I got the printer trying to find the appropriate tools to create my own designs and printing what Chuck had sent. I finally decided on Adobe Fusion 3D and took an online course from Udemy.Com. The online course was about 4 hours long and the instructor led students through a series of models that demonstrated the capabilities of the program and familiarised you with the program and the basics of 3D modelling.

The wrench shown in this photo is one of the models we created along with a coat hook, comb, taco stand, nozzle for a shop vac – about twelve in all.

Since that, I have created some of my own designs for the Soling 1M. The first was a replacement for the lazarette hatch supplied by Victor. That hatch is too heavy so had cut the rim down before. The new 3D printed hatch is better fitting and lighter.

This one is an earlier prototype with a scar in the print.

As well, I created a nameplate for the soling and I am working on a prototype boom vang, both pictured below.

I have a few more tutorials booked on my schedule on the Adobe Fusion support site, so look for more on this fascinating journey soon.

Meanwhile while I have been playing with this I have not been painting so when I finish this post I am going work on a couple of pieces I have been thinking about.

  • Who Are You?

I was away sailing in two model sailboat regattas at the end of May this year when I received a voice message on my phone. The message contained a male voice and originated  from a phone number in Nova Scotia. The man was shouting and swearing and the message ended with a death threat.

My first reaction was puzzlement, I did not recall anything in my recent past that would generate a death threat. I googled the telephone number which generated a name and then I googled the name. I found his FaceBook page and picture, I did not know him. I thought it must be a misdialed number, but who knows?

I called Silvia at home to let her know what had happened and together we decided to call the police in Halifax. I called the non-emergency number and filed a report. The police took the information and treated it very seriously. They dispatched two officers to my home, talked to Silvia and then called me. I played the message for them over the phone and gave them the information I found online.

When I followed up with them a week later I learned it was a wrong number, I was not the subject of the threat. The man was angry with someone and made a stupid call. He was “spoken to” by the police but as I understand it no charges were laid. I have no quarrel with that result, people make mistakes.

I know that these kinds of calls and threats are a regular part of the landscape for the staff in the offices of our elected officials. I wonder if people become accustomed to it, or are they puzzled and concerned as I was.

I am left to wonder what kind of people think this is OK. Are they the same people that bully the cashier in a store, or go bananas when their special coffee order with 1-1/2 of this and 2/3 of that is not perfect?

Who are you people? What is wrong with you?

  • Zombies

I woke up at 3:30 am today and inexplicably had this thought about zombies.

Why do zombies want to eat brains?

To create fans! Clearly, you have to be brainless to care about a TV show featuring zombies. It had to be said, hate me if you must but you know I am right.

  • Sam Austin – Putting the Record Straight

Dartmouth Nova Scotia is a great City, part of the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Too often we are critiqued based on outdated notions of what this community is all about.

A case in point is raised by Municipal Councillor Sam Austin http://www.samaustin.ca/letter-to-the-coast-downtown-dartmouth/

The Coast was once a great paper, let’s hope they can aspire to that again.

  • Two treatments of the same image

Two treatments of the same image

I was asked if I would donate a painting to a charity event. The theme is Tuscany so I searched for images I could use as a reference.

I created two images and they can choose one or both.

  • Just Coffee Please

    Just Coffee Please

OK, this is not a world shattering problem.

Why can’t we have a coffee shop or a line for people who just want a simple cup of coffee.

You want a sandwich, muffin, skinny latte or some other special concoction get in the other line. In my line we only serve coffee, no special blends or roasts and you can only add one cream and one sugar. Really I think we should stick to black and make a spot where you can add cream and sugar yourself.

There is a proliferation of shops that will cater to the precious sensitivities of coffee snobs. I doubt many of you can tell the difference but if you want to pay $5 for coffee go ahead. I just want a single line where we can get coffee, quickly without fuss – it’s early and I am not ready to deal with the existence of a machiatto. #justcoffeeplease
